How to apply the method

Statement. You have three sealed boxes with false labels: Apples, Oranges, and Mixed. You may draw one fruit from one box only.

  1. Restate the goal. You must identify all three boxes with certainty, not just one.
  2. List the conditions. There are three possible contents and every label is wrong.
  3. Find the dominant constraint. The box labeled “Mixed” cannot be mixed; therefore it contains only one kind of fruit.
  4. Start from the decisive box. Draw from “Mixed”. If you draw an apple, that box contains only apples; if you draw an orange, only oranges.
  5. Propagate the information. The other two boxes are forced because their labels are false too.
  6. Verify. Check that no label matches its real content.

The key is not trying boxes at random, but finding the condition that turns a single draw into enough information.
