How to apply the method
Statement. You have three sealed boxes with false labels: Apples, Oranges, and Mixed. You may draw one fruit from one box only.
- Restate the goal. You must identify all three boxes with certainty, not just one.
- List the conditions. There are three possible contents and every label is wrong.
- Find the dominant constraint. The box labeled “Mixed” cannot be mixed; therefore it contains only one kind of fruit.
- Start from the decisive box. Draw from “Mixed”. If you draw an apple, that box contains only apples; if you draw an orange, only oranges.
- Propagate the information. The other two boxes are forced because their labels are false too.
- Verify. Check that no label matches its real content.
The key is not trying boxes at random, but finding the condition that turns a single draw into enough information.
